I read this in the questions from this site:

http://www.funtrivia.com/en/Music/Cradle-of-Filth-12789.html

I belive it because it has a lot of accurate questions and answers.

Any proof??

It was probably Jon Kennedy on bass.

Benjamin Ryan confirmed it in the Documentary "Covered in Filth" which I own and will post a picture to confirm that I do own it. If I had a way to hook up my pc to a VHS I would snapshot the picture in question. I can try downloading the DVD and taking a snapshot, unless someone else finds the picture. There is video footage of them with the mask on. They are not Slipknot like mask at all. There more on the lines of something like that you apply on your face which can be removed, but it was not paint. The time period this occured was with the Ryan twins, Allender, Dani, Nick, and not sure who played bass at that time, though I know it was for sure not Robin.

Anyone that has seen this video knows this has been confirmed. Due note, this lasted a VERY short time an the downfalls of this is what led them to try out corpse paint.

I never got around to buy covered in filth. Though one day at the record store I was standing behind 10 copies of it, I instead bought Bitter Suites...
And it was the day of the Vegas signing sessions too.

Also, on the Maximum Filth CD, the woman says that Ben Ryan used to play a lot of their live sets wearing a "giant paper mache goat's head". How strange :D.

Wait, if they ditched the masks when Robin joined, then they were still doing death metal. When Robin first joined he did guitar, not bass. So the lineup would've been Dani, Paul R., Robin, Jon, Benjamin, and Darren.

They didn't ditch the mask when Rob joined. The (very short) time period they did this Rob was not in the band at all. This was before Rob joined on as a guitarist, way before he even returned as a bassist.

I think all of this confusion could be taken away if we could just see the video.

OK, I'm watching the video now. Lineup was..

Dani Davey
Jon Pritchard
Paul Ryan
Benjamin Ryan
Darren (not sure of last name)

Which is the original lineup.

They did this in 1991 according to Paul Ryan. They got the see-through half-mask at some local shop. This was when they had persona's or characters. For example, Ben Ryan was 'The Undertaker" and dressed like one. Because Rob introduced them to the Norwegian Black Metal gimmick, it's possible to assume he or someone else in the band thought it be a better alternative to switch to corpse paint. If you find a pic of this lineup posted above (before Rob) you will think its paint, but its those mask in question.

Funny how CoF posted a Peta2.com thingy, when they used to put (real) pig heads on stakes onstage as a joke.
